Performance metrics feel like a setup lately

Is it just me or are the performance metrics and expectations feeling increasingly... aggressive? My manager keeps bringing up 'individual contribution' and 'impact on core objectives' in a way that feels less about development and more about justification. We've had a few people on other teams quietly exit in the last month, no big announcement, just... gone. It's making everyone nervous. I'm worried they're building a case for cuts down the line by setting impossible standards now. My workload hasn't decreased, but the emphasis on hitting these specific, often subjective, targets feels like a way to weed people out without resorting to outright layoffs. Anyone else in a similar boat or have advice on how to navigate this?

I've been feeling this too. The emphasis on metrics has definitely ramped up, and it feels like the goalposts are constantly shifting. It's tough to feel like you're succeeding when the definition of success keeps changing, and the pressure to constantly prove your value is immense. It creates a pretty anxious environment when you see people leaving without clear reasons. It makes you wonder what's really going on behind the scenes and if your own contributions are even being seen in the right light.
