Burnout is real—are we prepping for a reduction?

I’ve been at Pentair for a few years now, and the workload lately has become completely unsustainable. We’re losing senior staff members who just aren’t being replaced, and the remaining work is being dumped on the rest of us without any real support or budget. It feels like they are squeezing the lemon until there’s nothing left. I have a gut feeling that this ‘efficiency initiative’ is just a precursor to a wider RIF. Usually, when they start cutting the support staff and freezing backfills, the next step is a broad round of layoffs to ‘right-size’ the organization. If you look at the recent travel restrictions and the crackdown on discretionary spending, it’s all pointing toward cost-cutting. Is anyone else seeing the writing on the wall, or am I just being cynical? I’d love to know if anyone in management has dropped any hints about where we’re headed, because the constant anxiety of ‘am I next?’ is making it impossible to focus on my actual work.

I’ve seen this cycle before. When leadership starts using buzzwords like 'efficiency initiatives' while simultaneously letting headcount dwindle, it’s rarely a good sign. The burnout is absolutely real, and management seems to think we can just keep doing the work of three people indefinitely. Honestly, if you’re seeing backfills being frozen and resources stripped, start updating your resume quietly. It’s better to be ahead of the curve than caught off guard when the restructuring notice finally drops.

Hang in there, though I totally understand why you’re concerned. Pentair has historically had its ups and downs, but the current climate definitely feels different. The lack of support for remaining staff is the biggest red flag. If they aren't replacing those senior roles, it’s clear they are trying to lean out the books for the next quarter. Don't set yourself on fire to keep their bottom line warm. Keep your head down, do what you can, and keep an eye on the market just in case.
