Sorry to hear about the layoff. 12 years is a long time, you deserve a fair package. Absolutely negotiate! Highlight your positive performance reviews and any specific contributions you made that directly impacted revenue. Equity is tough to negotiate on, but years of service should definitely be a talking point. Do some research on what similar positions and tenure are getting at other companies in the area. Honestly, negotiating severance is often an uphill battle. They probably have a formula they're sticking to, and HR usually doesn't have much wiggle room. However, NY can be more employee-friendly, so it's worth a shot. Focus on the cost to them of you potentially fighting the layoff – legal fees, bad PR. Mention you need time to secure new employment and a bridge for benefits. Document everything and be polite but firm. Don't expect miracles, but you might get a little extra.
