Stagnant hiring and 'efficiency' talks

It feels like we’ve been in a holding pattern for months. Every time a role opens up in my org, it gets pulled or 're-evaluated' before we can even get to the interview stage. I’m starting to get that uneasy feeling again. We went through this a few years ago right before the internal restructuring announcement, and the patterns are looking identical. Management keeps talking about 'operational efficiency' and 'streamlining workflows,' which is corporate speak for trimming the fat. I’m not seeing any official WARN notices or anything, but the energy in the breakrooms is pretty grim. If you’re a contractor or a newer hire, I’d definitely be keeping your options open. Does anyone know if the upstream vs. midstream split is seeing different levels of scrutiny? It feels like the heat is definitely turned up in the Houston corporate offices compared to the field staff.

I've been watching the same trend in my department. Every time we identify a critical gap, the requisition vanishes into a black hole of 're-evaluation.' It is exhausting to keep doing the work of three people while leadership avoids the transparency we deserve. If you see the writing on the wall, trust your gut. The last time they used the efficiency buzzword, half my team ended up out on the street. Start updating your resume now, because waiting for a formal announcement is just losing valuable time.

Honestly, the constant talk about efficiency is becoming a predictable red flag at this point. It feels like we are living through a slow-motion repeat of the previous restructuring. At this stage, I have stopped expecting any real growth or new headcount and am just focused on keeping my head down. If you feel like your role is becoming redundant, you are probably not imagining things. Keep your network active and your options open—corporate loyalty only goes one way when the spreadsheets don't look perfect.
