Is Pinterest really doubling down on AI, or is it an excuse?

Saw the news about the latest cuts at Pinterest. They're saying it's to 'double-down on AI' and 'reshape the product roadmap'. Sounds familiar, right? Seems like every tech company is using 'AI' as the magic word to justify layoffs lately. I'm wondering if this is a genuine strategic shift or just a convenient narrative to push out headcount. Remember those HN threads about engineers getting fired for building a layoff tracker? That really sticks with me. It paints a picture of a company that's either tone-deaf or actively trying to suppress internal dissent about these kinds of decisions. If they're so confident about this AI pivot, why the need to silence people asking questions internally? I'm just trying to understand the real motivations. Are there specific AI initiatives that are proving more valuable than the roles being cut? Or is this more about cost-cutting dressed up in tech jargon? Curious to hear from anyone inside who has a clearer picture.

It's a tough cycle to watch. Every company seems to be undergoing some kind of 'strategic realignment' lately, and the justification often sounds like it's plucked from a corporate buzzword bingo card. Hard to tell what's genuine strategy and what's just a softer way to announce restructuring. Hope those affected land on their feet quickly.

The 'reshape the product roadmap' excuse is definitely a classic. It feels like there's a playbook companies are following: announce a pivot, cut staff, and hope the market buys the narrative. The user experience is what ultimately matters, and it's hard to see how these shifts truly benefit the people actually using the platform in the long run.
