Anyone else noticing the quiet freeze on hiring?

Is it just my department, or has everything come to a screeching halt lately? I’ve been tracking a few open requisitions in our group that were supposed to be backfills, and they’ve all been pulled or put on indefinite hold over the last three weeks. Management keeps using the 'prudent resource allocation' buzzword, but we all know what that usually signals in banking. There’s a weird vibe in the office—people are keeping their heads down and moving slower than usual. Nobody wants to be the one to ask during the town halls, but the lack of transparency is starting to get to me. Has anyone heard anything about budget cuts or a tightening of the belt for Q3/Q4? I’m starting to get that uneasy feeling again, like we’re just waiting for the other shoe to drop before the quarter closes.

Same thing here in my division. We had two open headcount slots for months that were suddenly deleted from the system last Tuesday. When we pressed leadership during the town hall, they gave us the standard 'operational efficiency' line, which we all know is just code for cutting costs before the next quarterly report. The morale is definitely taking a hit; everyone is acting like we're bracing for an impact. It's tough to stay motivated when you're doing the work of two people and the company refuses to backfill critical roles. Just keep your head down and look out for yourself.

I wouldn't call it a total surprise given the current economic climate and where the stock has been hovering. PNC is notoriously conservative with their spending when volatility spikes, and 'prudent resource allocation' is essentially their favorite way of saying they’re tightening the belt until further notice. I’ve seen this pattern during previous cycles—they pause all external hiring first, then transition into quiet restructuring. If your requisition got pulled, don't expect it to open back up anytime soon. It’s a good time to update your resume and make sure your LinkedIn is polished, just in case things get worse.
