PNC: Managerial 'efficiency' focus

It feels like every meeting this month has been about 'optimizing workflows' and 'removing redundancies.' I’ve sat through three slide decks now where they basically outline how we need to do more with the same amount of people, or in some cases, fewer. My manager is suddenly obsessed with tracking granular tasks that we’ve never had to log before. It’s micro-management to a level I haven't seen in years here. Is this happening everywhere, or are they just targeting specific back-office units to trim the fat without doing a formal announcement? My team is burnt out, and the constant threat of 'operational excellence' is just a code word for cutting headcount eventually. If you’re seeing this in your line of business, let me know. Trying to figure out if I need to update the resume this weekend or if I'm just being paranoid.

It is definitely not just your unit. The focus on 'efficiency' has become the company-wide mantra lately. Management seems to think that tightening the screws on documentation and task logging is the secret to success, but it’s really just creating a culture of distrust. Many of us are feeling the exact same burnout from these constant slide decks and the expectation to perform at higher levels with dwindling resources. Don't take the micromanagement personally; it is coming from the top down, and it is exhausting.

I have been with PNC for quite a while, and the current obsession with granular task tracking is reaching a breaking point. It feels like they are trying to justify layoffs or justify their own positions by creating busy work for the rest of us. If you are being asked to track things that were never monitored before, it is usually a sign that they are preparing to restructure or tighten the budget further. Start documenting your own value quietly and keep your eyes open for other opportunities because this management style rarely pivots back once it starts.
