Anyone else noticing the silent hiring freeze?

Is it just me, or has the atmosphere at PPL shifted over the last couple of months? I’ve been keeping an eye on the internal career portal and it seems like half the open roles that were posted back in Q1 have just vanished without being filled. I checked with a friend in HR, and they were pretty tight-lipped, but they mentioned a 'reprioritization of headcount' for the remainder of the fiscal year. We’ve seen other major utilities start shedding roles to boost margins for shareholders, and I’m starting to get that nervous feeling in my gut. My manager keeps talking about 'operational efficiency' during our weekly check-ins, which is usually the corporate way of saying budget cuts are coming down the pipeline. Has anyone else heard any rumblings from leadership about Q3 or Q4 plans? I know we’re supposedly stable, but the lack of movement on backfills is really starting to look like a red flag to me. I’m already dusting off the resume just in case, but I’d love to hear if anyone has a better pulse on what's going on behind closed doors.

It’s definitely not just you. The silence from management is the loudest part. I’ve been tracking those same listings, and seeing them disappear without a word is a massive red flag. When they start using corporate speak like 'reprioritization of headcount,' it’s usually the precursor to a broader restructuring. Don’t wait for them to give you a heads-up; if your workload has been getting heavier without backfills, start updating your resume now. It’s better to be ahead of the curve than to be blindsided when the next quarterly report drops and they announce a formal reduction in force to appease the street.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions just yet. While the career portal looks a bit barren, it’s common for utilities to throttle hiring during mid-year budget reviews, especially with current interest rates impacting capital expenditure projects. PPL has always been conservative with their hiring cycles. I’d take the 'reprioritization' comment at face value rather than assuming the worst. They’re likely just tightening the belt on non-essential roles until the next fiscal cycle starts. Focus on your current projects and wait for the town hall meeting next month—they usually provide more clarity then.
