Another round of layoffs - when does it end?

Just saw the news about the 54 people let go on July 31st. It feels like every time we turn around, there's another 'strategic adjustment' or 'restructuring' happening. I’ve been with PFG for years, but the anxiety in the office—and even on Zoom calls—is palpable. You never know if your team is next on the chopping block. Management keeps talking about efficiency and moving resources, but it really feels like they are just trimming headcount to juice the quarterly numbers before the next earnings call. If you were impacted by this latest round, I am truly sorry. Does anyone have any insight into which departments were hit hardest this time? Trying to figure out if we’re looking at a broader shift in strategy or if this was isolated to specific legacy roles. Stay safe out there.

It is honestly exhausting to watch. Every single 'restructuring' announcement feels exactly the same, and the corporate jargon about efficiency is just a thin veil for cutting costs to satisfy shareholders. After years of giving my all to this place, the loyalty is definitely a one-way street. The uncertainty makes it impossible to focus on actual projects because you’re constantly checking your inbox for the next calendar invite that shouldn't be there. If you're feeling anxious, you're not alone, because management has made it crystal clear that we are just numbers on a balance sheet.

I understand the frustration, but these shifts are unfortunately the reality of the current financial sector. While the timing is rough and the internal atmosphere is understandably tense, it is worth looking at the broader market trends that Principal is likely reacting to. It sucks to see colleagues go, but sometimes these moves are about keeping the firm competitive in a volatile economy. Instead of spiraling over the next round, maybe try to focus on upskilling or networking outside the company just in case. Protecting your own career has to be the top priority right now.
