IT and Back Office bloat - are we next?

Been lurking here for a while and seeing the typical post-earnings tension. We had that all-hands meeting last week where leadership kept emphasizing 'efficiency' and 'streamlining workflows' about a dozen times. Every time I hear that word, I assume someone is looking at an org chart with a red pen. I’m in a support role at the corporate level and the atmosphere is just off. There’s a noticeable lack of new project approvals and a sudden freeze on some of the recurring budget items we usually get signed off on without issue. It feels like they are waiting for the quarter to close to pull the trigger. If you work in a non-revenue generating department, have you noticed your managers acting distant? Trying to gauge if this is company-wide or just localized to my wing.

The red pen is definitely hovering. I’ve been through three of these cycles at Public Storage now, and the 'efficiency' buzzwords are always the precursor to a layoff announcement. When new project approvals freeze and budget items get slashed, it means leadership is clearing the decks to make the quarterly numbers look better for investors. If you’re in a support role, update your resume this weekend. Don't wait for the calendar invite from HR; the writing is clearly on the wall for the corporate side.

It’s exhausting hearing the same corporate script every earnings season. Honestly, the atmosphere has been tense for a while, but the lack of project approvals is a major red flag that something deeper is happening behind closed doors. Management loves to frame these cuts as 'optimizing our resources,' but we all know it means more work for the people who remain. Just keep your head down, do your job, and don't get too attached to current workflows because things are bound to shift drastically within the next month.
