Is the performance review process getting harsher?

Has anyone else noticed that the performance review rubrics feel much tighter this year? I’ve been with Publix for a while, and the feedback I’m getting now is drastically different from previous cycles. It feels like they are looking for any reason to justify 'needs improvement' ratings, even for people who have been hitting all their KPIs. I’m starting to get the sense that they are prepping for a tiered exit strategy by weeding out the 'bottom performers' before the new fiscal year. It’s making everyone in my division extremely paranoid. It’s hard to focus on actual productivity when it feels like the goalposts are moving every single week. Is this just my department, or are others seeing a deliberate attempt to make the rating system less forgiving? I’m genuinely wondering if I should start updating my resume just in case the 'performance management' turns into a round of involuntary departures.

Honestly, I’ve noticed the exact same trend. It feels like management has been instructed to tighten the screws across the board. I’ve seen long-term associates get hit with 'meets expectations' when they’ve been carrying the department for years. It’s definitely demoralizing, and the shift in tone during reviews feels way more corporate and cold than it used to be. It’s hard not to feel like they’re just trying to cut costs by trimming the veteran staff who make the higher hourly rates. Keep your head down and document everything you do.

I haven't felt that pressure personally, but I know it varies a lot depending on your specific store manager. My review was actually pretty standard, and they seemed focused on the usual customer service metrics. Maybe it depends on your district or if your store is currently under a microscope for labor costs? If you’re consistently hitting your KPIs, you should definitely push back during the review process. Don't let them label you as a low performer if the numbers clearly show you're doing your job well. Talk to your store manager about your concerns before signing off.
