Feeling the pressure to do more with less

It feels like the goalposts for our project milestones moved again this month, yet the headcount remains stagnant. We’re being told to 'accelerate timelines' without any additional support. I honestly feel like management is trying to force people to burn out so they can save on severance packages later. Every week there’s another meeting about 'synergy' and 'efficiency.' It’s the same vibe I saw at my last pharma company about six months before they initiated a massive wave of layoffs. Maybe I’m just being paranoid, but the energy in the office is definitely off. Does anyone know if they are still doing those 'voluntary' exit packages, or are they just squeezing us until we leave on our own? The constant anxiety is making it impossible to focus on the actual science.

I’ve been tracking the pattern at Regeneron for a while now, and that 'efficiency' buzzword is always the canary in the coal mine. When they start pushing for impossible milestones while holding the headcount steady, it’s rarely because they suddenly found a new way to work smarter. It’s almost always about cleaning up the balance sheet before the end of the fiscal year. Start updating your resume now, because the writing is on the wall. Don't wait until the restructuring announcement hits your inbox to start looking for a way out.

Hang in there. I’ve seen this exact cycle play out multiple times in this industry. Leadership loves to talk about 'operational excellence' and 'synergy' right before they pull the rug out from under everyone. It is incredibly frustrating to be given more work with fewer resources while management pretends everything is business as usual. Just keep your head down and do what is required, but definitely don't kill yourself for a company that is clearly treating you as a disposable expense. Prioritize your own mental health and keep your networking contacts active.
