Regeneron: Performance reviews and 'right-sizing' worries

It’s that time of year again where the anxiety about calibration meetings hits its peak. I’ve been hearing rumors that they are using the performance review process as a way to quietly exit people without labeling it a formal RIF. If you’re placed in a certain bucket, does it feel like there’s actually a pathway to improvement, or is it just the first step toward being shown the door? My team is terrified. We’re being asked to hit impossible KPIs despite having zero headcount support for the open roles on our team. It feels like a setup to force people out through burnout or bad ratings. I’ve been through 'restructures' before, and the pattern is always the same: first, they squeeze the productivity, then they start trimming the headcount to 'optimize operational efficiency.' If you see your management acting overly critical of minor administrative tasks that they never cared about before, watch your back. I’m curious if anyone else has been told that their department budget is being 're-evaluated' for 2025. This place used to feel like a stable home, but the culture is shifting toward something much colder.

The 'calibration' process has become a transparent tool for weeding people out. If you find yourself in the bottom bucket, don't buy into the 'performance improvement plan' narrative. It’s almost always designed to build a paper trail for termination rather than provide actual coaching. Protect yourself, update your resume immediately, and start networking outside the company before they finalize their lists. The KPIs are set to impossible levels precisely to force these outcomes.

I understand the stress, but take a deep breath. While the rumors are always flying this time of year, not every review cycle is a precursor to a purge. Focus on documenting your wins clearly and keeping your manager aligned on your current workload. If the KPIs truly aren't achievable, have those conversations in writing now rather than waiting for the review. Sometimes it’s just bureaucratic noise, though keeping your eyes open for new opportunities is never a bad strategy.
