Backfilling freeze getting real?

I’ve been tracking a few open roles in our division for a while now, and they just vanished from the internal portal overnight. No update, no 'position filled,' they just ceased to exist. We have multiple people on my team drowning in work, and every time we ask about headcount to backfill a resignation, we get the 'we are evaluating our strategic needs' line. It’s getting pretty obvious that they’re trying to squeeze out more productivity with fewer people before announcing anything official. Honestly, the morale is hitting an all-time low. If you're currently in a seat that has high visibility, I’d be watching my back. Anyone else seeing specific roles just evaporate like this?

Same here in my department. We lost two senior analysts months ago and the workload was just dumped onto the rest of us without a second thought. Management keeps using that 'strategic evaluation' nonsense, but it’s clear they have no intention of hiring back. They're banking on the fact that we'll just absorb the work to keep our bonuses. It’s an unsustainable cycle, and morale is absolutely cratering. At this point, I’m just waiting for the next round of 'efficiency initiatives' to see if my role is next on the chopping block.
