Regions Financial - What's the deal with hiring freezes?

Just noticed a few job postings that were open a couple weeks ago are now gone from the Regions careers page. A friend who applied for an internal role said it was put on hold indefinitely. This is on top of the general slowdown I've been hearing about in terms of backfills for people who have left. It feels like a pretty clear signal that the purse strings are being tightened. I haven't seen any official announcements about a layoff, but this definitely points to some kind of cost-cutting measure. Is anyone else in recruiting or hiring management seeing this happen? Curious if this is company-wide or specific to certain divisions. Trying to get a read on the situation before making any personal career decisions.
