Performance Improvement Plans becoming suspiciously common?

Is it just my department, or is HR suddenly pushing PIPs for everyone who isn't a top-tier performer? I’ve been at Reliance for over four years and the atmosphere in my division has shifted dramatically in the last two months. Suddenly, management is obsessed with 'optimization' and 'leaner headcount' metrics. I see people getting pulled into closed-door meetings left and right. It feels like a soft layoff disguised as performance management to avoid severance payouts. My manager keeps dodging questions about budget freezes, which is never a good sign. Curious if anyone else is seeing a surge in these 'corrective actions' in other business units. I'm honestly starting to polish my resume because the uncertainty is killing my productivity.

It is happening across several divisions, not just yours. The corporate focus on 'optimization' has definitely ramped up recently, and it is pretty obvious what they are doing. Many of us see the PIP process being weaponized to cycle out mid-level staff without having to pay formal severance packages. It has turned the workplace culture into a pressure cooker where everyone is looking over their shoulder. Document everything you do, save your emails, and start updating your resume on the quiet. The writing is clearly on the wall.

Honestly, I think you’re reading too much into it. Companies go through these cycles all the time where they tighten the belt and re-evaluate performance standards. If you’ve been there four years, you know how these shifts in management priorities work. They are just trying to keep the business agile in a tough market. Instead of worrying about a 'soft layoff,' just focus on your deliverables and making sure your output is visible. If you’re performing well, you really have nothing to worry about.
