Anyone notice the sudden freeze on hiring/backfills?

I’m in engineering, and we’ve had a few departures in the last month that were basically marked as 'indefinitely on hold' rather than getting a backfill. Usually, we move pretty fast to replace talent, but leadership is being incredibly tight-lipped about the budget. Every time someone asks about team growth or new headcount in the open Q&A sessions, we get the classic non-answer about 'fiscal responsibility.' It feels like they are trying to shrink the team through attrition so they don’t have to do a mass announcement later. I’m starting to get nervous. I don't see any public announcements of layoffs, but the internal tightening of the belt is palpable. Has anyone else noticed their specific teams shrinking or being denied budget for resources?

Same here. It’s been crickets from management for weeks regarding open reqs. I’ve watched two of our senior leads leave, and instead of interviewing, we’re just being told to 'prioritize core initiatives' with less bandwidth. It’s pretty obvious they’re letting the headcount bleed out to trim the burn rate without going through a formal layoff announcement. The vibe in the office has definitely shifted to 'keep your head down and hope you aren't the next one left holding the bag on a massive project.'

I’ve been tracking the internal listings, and the sudden freeze is definitely industry-wide, but it’s hitting differently here. The 'fiscal responsibility' line is just corporate speak for 'we’re prepping for a rough quarter.' It sucks because we’re currently drowning in tech debt and burning out trying to cover for the people who left. If they don’t open up hiring soon, the quality of updates is going to tank, and then we'll all be wondering why the metrics are down. It’s definitely time to dust off the resume just in case.
