Anyone else seeing the backfill freeze tighten?

It feels like the messaging from leadership is getting more cryptic by the week. My manager keeps mentioning 'headcount optimization' whenever someone leaves, and the backfill process for open roles has become a total bureaucratic nightmare. Two people in my group left last month and HR is suddenly radio silent on replacing them, just saying everything is 'under review.' Is this just standard fiscal year-end posturing, or are we gearing up for something larger? It feels like we’re being squeezed to keep the margins looking pretty for the next earnings call. Curious if other divisions are seeing the same 'silent' attrition where they just don't replace people who jump ship.

It’s definitely not just you. I’ve seen the same pattern in my department. Whenever someone hands in their resignation, the position is immediately 'paused' for review. It feels like they are squeezing the teams to do more with less before the next quarter hits. Don't expect any backfills anytime soon—the budget is clearly locked down tight, and management is keeping us in the dark while they quietly push for higher margins. Keep your resume polished and stay prepared for anything because the atmosphere feels remarkably similar to the last round of restructures.
