The 'operational efficiency' label is almost always corporate speak for headcount reduction. I've been through three of these cycles here, and the pattern never changes: vague town halls, mysterious calendar invites, and middle management acting like they’re keeping secrets they aren't authorized to share. If your lead came out looking shell-shocked, trust your gut. It is better to start looking for a new role now while you still have your current one than to wait for the official email to hit your inbox on a Friday afternoon.
Honestly, the lack of transparency is the most frustrating part of the whole situation. If they are planning a reduction in force, dragging it out creates a toxic work environment that kills productivity anyway. At this point, I think most of us have stopped caring about the quarterly targets and are just waiting to see if we still have access to our email accounts next week. Don't feel guilty about prioritizing yourself; management certainly isn't looking out for anyone but the shareholders right now.
