RTO Mandate and Layoffs - What's the Real Reason?

So, we've got the RTO mandate coming up in October, and on the heels of another layoff round (news reports on June 9th). It feels like a double whammy. I'm trying to understand the connection. Is the RTO push a way to evaluate who's really 'essential' before more cuts? Or is it to boost productivity in offices, which leadership then uses as a reason why fewer people are needed? I've heard whispers about offshoring too, which makes the RTO demand even more confusing. If they're planning to shift work elsewhere, why force everyone back to the office? It feels like conflicting messages are being sent, and for those of us who survived the latest cuts, it's creating a lot of anxiety about what's next. Just trying to make sense of the strategy here, or if it's just chaos management.

The RTO mandate feels like a classic move to flush out those who aren't as committed or whose roles can be easily replicated elsewhere. Layoffs often follow major strategic shifts, and if offshoring is on the table, forcing people back into the office might be a way to assess who's truly indispensable before making those difficult decisions. It's a tough climate, and these moves often seem designed to streamline operations, even if it means sacrificing employee morale and trust in the short term. Keep an eye on how the productivity metrics are spun after the RTO takes hold.
