SAP's Cloud Transformation - Is This the Real Reason for the Cuts?

Just saw the news about the layoffs on June 17th. 3000 people gone. I'm trying to process this and connect the dots. We've all been hearing about SAP's aggressive push into the cloud, especially with S/4HANA Cloud. Is this just a natural consequence of shifting resources and skillsets? Are they replacing traditional on-premise roles with cloud-focused ones? It feels like a massive disruption. I'm wondering about the long-term strategy here. Are they betting the farm on the cloud, and if so, what does that mean for the rest of us who are still supporting the existing infrastructure or in roles that don't directly align with cloud development/operations? It’s hard not to feel uneasy about the future and whether my role is secure. Anyone else in a similar boat or have insights into how this cloud transition is actually playing out internally?

It's definitely a tough pill to swallow when you see these numbers. While the cloud shift is a major factor, I also wonder if there's an element of streamlining operations beyond just skillset changes. Companies often use these transformations as opportunities to re-evaluate entire business processes and eliminate redundancies that have built up over time. It's a harsh reality, but the pressure to stay competitive in the cloud era is immense.

The S/4HANA Cloud push is undeniable, and it makes sense that roles requiring deep on-premise expertise might be scaled back. However, I suspect it's more nuanced than a simple one-to-one replacement. They'll likely need new skillsets for cloud architecture, integration, and security. The real question is whether the internal retraining efforts match the pace of the layoffs, or if they're relying on external hiring for those new cloud roles.
