Performance Improvement Plans becoming the new normal?

I’ve seen three people in my department get hit with 'performance improvement plans' in the last six weeks. These aren't people who were struggling before—these are solid, tenured employees who suddenly have impossible metrics to hit. It feels like a way to push people out the door without having to call it a layoff or pay out severance packages. It’s creating a massive amount of anxiety in the office. Everyone is walking on eggshells and afraid to even speak up in meetings for fear of being put on a list. Is this happening in other departments, or is it just isolated to my division? It feels like a silent restructuring is underway to prune staff before the end of the fiscal year. Honestly, the morale here is in the gutter, and the lack of transparency is making it impossible to stay focused on actual work.

This is exactly how they handle headcount reduction nowadays. By turning PIPs into a weapon, management avoids the legal and financial baggage that comes with official layoffs. It is a calculated strategy to trim the budget while shifting the blame onto employees who were perfectly fine until the goalposts were moved overnight. Don't take it personally, because this is purely a financial maneuver meant to thin the herd. Keep your head down, document everything, and start polishing your resume immediately because the culture is clearly shifting toward a high-turnover model.

It is honestly depressing to watch what Sempra has turned into. I remember when tenure was actually valued, but now it feels like anyone with a decent salary is just a target for HR. When they start handing out impossible metrics to long-term staff, it’s not about performance; it’s about clearing space for cheaper hires. The atmosphere is completely toxic right now. If you have been there a long time, please protect yourself and do not trust the promises of 'coaching' or 'improvement.' They have already decided your fate, so make sure you are ready for whatever comes next.
