Hearing some rumblings about potential cuts. Anyone else in R&D seeing this?

Been with SW for about 5 years now, mostly in the R&D side of things, specifically polymer development. Lately, there's been a weird vibe in some of the team meetings. More 'efficiency' talk than usual, and some projects have been put on indefinite hold. My manager is being super tight-lipped, which is usually a bad sign. I haven't heard any concrete announcements, but the chatter is definitely there. Anyone else in similar roles, maybe in coatings or advanced materials, picking up on anything? Trying to gauge if this is a company-wide thing or just specific departments feeling the squeeze. If layoffs are coming, I'm wondering what the general severance packages look like at SW historically. Trying to prepare mentally, if nothing else.

Yeah, I'm in a related area, though not R&D directly. We've definitely seen some restructuring discussions filtering down. Lots of talk about optimizing resources and streamlining processes. It's easy to get spooked when things feel uncertain, and the lack of clear communication from management doesn't help. Hang in there – hopefully, it's just standard business adjustments and not as serious as it feels. Keep your ears open but try not to let the rumor mill get to you too much.

Interesting you mention R&D specifically. I'm in manufacturing, and we've been under a microscope for efficiency gains for a while now. Projects get paused and re-evaluated all the time; it's part of the game, especially in a large corporation. Could be that R&D is just entering a similar phase. Sometimes 'indefinite hold' just means they're waiting for budget cycles or strategic shifts. I'd focus on documenting your contributions and value, regardless of what's happening organizationally.
