Travel budget slashed, work travel grounded

Just got word that all non-essential field travel for the industrial side has been suspended indefinitely. This wasn't a standard 'monitor your expenses' memo; it was a hard stop. We had three site visits scheduled for next month to support some of our larger contract accounts, and they’ve all been scrubbed. When I pressed for an explanation, the response was basically 'capital preservation.' This feels like the precursor to something worse. Every time we’ve seen these kinds of broad, sweeping restrictions on basic operational tools, layoffs usually follow within six months. Is anyone else seeing this in their respective regions? I’m starting to update my resume just in case, because this feels way too similar to 2009.

Been seeing the same pattern across the industrial divisions lately. Whenever they start slashing travel budgets under the guise of 'capital preservation,' it is rarely just about cutting flight costs. It usually signals that the quarterly numbers aren't hitting the targets and they are trying to pad the bottom line to look better for investors. If the site visits are gone, it usually means the bean counters have already decided that those specific accounts aren't worth the maintenance spend right now. Keep your head down and start updating your resume just in case.
