Anyone else noticing the bizarre lack of backfills lately?

Is it just me, or has the hiring freeze become incredibly obvious across almost every org over the last month? I’ve been tracking a few open roles in my department that were supposed to be priority hires, but they’ve been pulled down without a word. My skip-level manager is acting noticeably strange during the all-hands—lots of canned corporate speak about 'efficiency' and 'streamlining operations' post-acquisition, but zero actual substance. I’ve been at Splunk for a few years, and usually, the office vibe is pretty high energy. Lately, it feels like everyone is just keeping their head down and waiting for the other shoe to drop. The integration with Cisco is clearly hitting some roadblocks, or at least that’s the rumor mill chatter. I’m starting to get that pit in my stomach again. I’ve reached out to a few recruiters just to see what the market looks like, and while it’s not as red-hot as two years ago, it’s not dead either. Has anyone seen actual headcount reductions in their immediate team, or is this just standard pre-merger anxiety manifesting as mass paranoia? I’m genuinely curious if there’s a timeline being leaked or if we’re all just staring at the wall expecting a disaster that might not come for another two quarters.

It is definitely not just you. The silence from leadership is deafening, and watching priority roles vanish overnight is a massive red flag. That 'efficiency' talk is the universal signal that headcount planning has been frozen indefinitely to keep the balance sheet looking pretty for the parent company. I have stopped counting how many internal tickets for open positions have been closed without explanation. If you have been here a few years, you know this isn't the same culture anymore. Keep your head down, but start updating your portfolio just in case.

I have noticed the exact same thing. It feels like every time we get close to filling a gap, the role gets pulled by finance under the guise of 're-evaluating business needs.' It is incredibly frustrating when you are drowning in tickets and your skip-level keeps dodging direct questions about team capacity. The transition has turned the place into a bureaucratic maze where nothing gets approved. Honestly, it feels like they are just waiting to see how much we can handle before they announce the next round of restructuring. Good luck to us all.
