Is the RTO mandate a precursor to soft layoffs?

Is anyone else noticing the sudden, aggressive push for 4+ days in the office across the business units? It feels like management is trying to 'encourage' a certain demographic of tenured employees to just walk away rather than going through the legal and PR headache of a formal RIF. Every time they talk about 'collaborative synergy' and 'innovation density' in the town halls, I look around and just see people polishing their LinkedIn profiles. The workload hasn't decreased, but the micromanagement of badge-ins has gone through the roof. It’s hard not to feel like this is a strategy to shed headcount without having to pay severance packages. I’ve been here long enough to see the patterns, and the vibes in the hallways feel exactly like they did right before the last major restructuring cycle. Anyone else getting that same gut feeling, or am I just being cynical?

It is not just your department. The RTO mandate is absolutely a tool to prune the headcount without the messy optics of a formal RIF. They know exactly who is going to quit when they remove the flexibility that was keeping some of our most experienced staff in place. It is a cost-cutting measure disguised as a cultural initiative, and anyone who has been here for more than a few years knows how this playbook works.
