I've been through a few of these cycles here, and you are spot on. When travel stops and the contractors start disappearing, the writing is usually on the wall. They try to normalize the attrition so the eventual layoffs don't look as drastic on paper. Don't feel guilty about updating your resume; loyalty to this place ended years ago. Protect yourself and make sure you have your connections lined up elsewhere before things actually hit the fan.
Maybe I’m being naive, but I think everyone is reading too much into the travel freeze. The entire semiconductor market is going through a massive correction right now, and management is just trying to tighten the belt until Q4 earnings look better. Terminating contractors is standard practice when budgets are frozen, not necessarily a precursor to a massive RIF. Try not to panic—the company has solid fundamentals, and this is just the reality of the current economic cycle we're all navigating.
