The 'operational efficiency' buzzwords are such a red flag. We went through this same exact cycle at my location last year, and those initial layoffs were absolutely just the tip of the iceberg. Leadership loves to keep things quiet while they finalize the rest of the consolidation plans, leaving everyone else in limbo. Honestly, don't buy the 'this is a one-time thing' narrative. Start updating your resume now and looking at other companies, because once the consultants start using terms like 'synergies,' it usually means headcount reduction is the top priority for the next few quarters.
It is frustrating to see the lack of transparency from the top. When they hit a site with a WARN notice like that, it rarely stays isolated. The focus on margins right now is aggressive, and these site consolidations are the easiest way for them to make the quarterly numbers look better for the shareholders. If the leadership is ignoring direct questions about the future of the facility, that tells you everything you need to know. Keep your head down, document everything, and start networking outside the company immediately. It is better to be prepared for the worst than to be blindsided by the next round.
