Anyone else getting the 'performance review' warnings?

Is it just me, or is the environment getting significantly more cutthroat lately? I’ve been hearing whispers about managers being forced to tier their teams, essentially hunting for people to put on PIPs to avoid official RIF announcements. The Lansing situation from a while back already spooked a lot of us, but this feels different. It’s not just big numbers anymore; it’s this weird, slow-bleed approach where they just manufacture reasons to let people go to keep the headcount metrics looking 'lean' for the street. I’m seeing people with 10+ years of tenure being scrutinized over minor policy infractions. If you’re a mid-level manager or engineer, just keep your head down and document everything. The culture shift here is real, and the 'we’re a family' messaging is wearing thinner by the day. Does anyone know if there’s a new round of 'structural adjustments' planned for Q3?

It is definitely happening across several departments. They are pushing the tiering system harder than ever to force performance issues where there aren't any. It feels like the company is trying to dodge the bad press of a massive layoff by doing it incrementally under the guise of 'performance management.' Keep your head down and document everything you do, because they are clearly looking for any reason to cut costs without admitting it publicly.

Honestly, the pressure to hit these arbitrary metrics has killed the culture here. I've seen perfectly good employees suddenly getting blindsided by PIPs just so management can meet their quotas. It’s a toxic way to manage, but it’s become the standard operating procedure lately. If you’re feeling the heat, you aren't crazy—the goalposts are being moved intentionally to make turnover look like a performance issue rather than a corporate strategy.
