Travelers: Performance reviews feeling a bit 'off' this year?

Is it just me, or does the feedback process this cycle feel a lot more defensive than usual? I’ve been hearing a lot of chatter about managers being told to tighten up ratings across the board, even for teams that hit every single KPI. It feels like they are manufacturing reasons to lower bonus payouts or set the stage for 'performance-based' exits if things get tight. My manager wouldn't give me a straight answer when I asked if there was a quota for top-tier ratings. Just seems like there's a weird tension in the air. Curious if other departments are seeing this, or if I'm just reading into the corporate theater too much. Everyone is keeping their head down, but the hallway talk—or lack thereof—is telling.

It is definitely not just you. The vibe shift is palpable across almost every department I have spoken with. There is a clear mandate to force a distribution curve that simply doesn't reflect the actual output of high-performing teams. When management refuses to address the 'quota' question head-on, you already have your answer. It is a classic move to manage payroll expectations downward while keeping employees on edge. Protect your documentation and keep your personal records updated, because the goalposts are moving for everyone right now.

I have noticed the exact same thing. My manager was clearly uncomfortable during our sit-down and kept circling back to vague 'calibration' excuses. It feels incredibly demoralizing to hit all your metrics only to be told you're suddenly average because of some arbitrary budget-driven rebalancing. They are definitely creating a paper trail to justify lower bonuses or potential head-count reductions down the road. If you feel like your evaluation wasn't based on your actual work, you are right to be skeptical. Trust your gut on this one.
