The constant tech debt vs. outsourcing cycle

I’m getting so tired of the internal narrative at Truist. We’re being told to do more with less while the firm continues to lean heavily on third-party contractors for critical infrastructure. Every time there’s a 'strategic initiative' announced, it feels like a soft layoff in disguise. You see the full-time headcount slowly being chipped away while the reliance on external vendors grows, yet the product quality is plummeting. It’s clear that the bean counters are prioritizing the bottom line over institutional knowledge. If you’ve been here long enough, you know the drill: they cut the mid-level tenured employees to save on salary and benefits, then realize they don’t have the documentation or tribal knowledge to maintain the systems, and then pay double to bring in consultants to patch it up. It’s an exhausting cycle and I don't see how this is sustainable long-term. Just venting because the morale in my group is at an all-time low and it feels like we’re just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

It is the same story every quarter. They preach 'innovation' and 'streamlining' in those glossy town halls, but the reality on the ground is just a hollowed-out workforce. Relying on contractors to build the backbone of the bank is a recipe for disaster. We are losing the institutional knowledge required to keep the lights on, and the technical debt is ballooning because the contractors just want to hit their billable hours and move on. Morale is nonexistent because we all know the plan is to offshore or outsource as much as possible before the next round of cuts.

I honestly think the leadership team is completely disconnected from the actual product. You cannot build a modern financial ecosystem by constantly churning through cheap third-party labor. The infrastructure is held together with duct tape and prayers at this point, and every time something breaks, we spend days trying to decipher poorly documented code from vendors who haven't worked here in months. It is incredibly frustrating to care about the quality of the platform when management clearly views us as nothing more than a line item on an expense report.
