Tired of the 'do more with less' mantra

I’ve been through two rounds now, and the 'we’re becoming a leaner, more efficient company' line is starting to really wear thin. My team is currently down to 40% of the headcount we had back in 2022, yet the roadmap for the next quarter hasn't changed at all. Management acts like the systems just maintain themselves. It’s not just the workload; it’s the constant anxiety of waiting for the next notification. I spend half my day checking LinkedIn to see who else left and the other half trying to keep legacy services afloat without the institutional knowledge we just axed. We keep hearing about the 'activist investors' and divestment strategies, but none of that explains why the internal morale is hitting an all-time low. I came here for the engineering culture, but that feels like a ghost of the past. If you’re still hanging on, how are you actually managing the burnout? I’m genuinely considering jumping ship before the next round, but the market feels just as frozen as our internal budgets.

I feel your pain. It’s the classic disconnect where leadership expects the same output with a skeleton crew, completely ignoring the technical debt that piles up when you’re just trying to keep the lights on. It’s unsustainable, and the burnout is real. Eventually, things break because there’s simply no one left to fix them. Stop checking LinkedIn for a minute and focus on what you can control, because the anxiety is only going to make the remaining work harder to get through. Take a breather.

That level of attrition is brutal, and unfortunately, the 'leaner' narrative is usually just a polite mask for a complete lack of long-term planning. When a roadmap stays aggressive while resources are slashed, it’s a sign that the leadership is just kicking the can down the road. You aren't alone in feeling like you're doing the job of three people. If the morale is that low and the goalposts keep moving, start prioritizing your own peace of mind over the project list. Your health matters more than their quarterly targets.
