3,300 headcount gone—is anyone actually surprised anymore?

Woke up to the news about the 3,300 cuts and honestly, I just feel numb. I’ve been at Uber for three years and it feels like we’re in a constant state of restructuring. Every quarter it’s the same script—'necessary changes,' 'streamlining operations,' 'focusing on the core.' But looking at the internal slack channels this morning, the vibe is just pure, unadulterated fear. People are already scrubbing their LinkedIn profiles and trying to figure out if their team was part of the 'efficiency push' or if the other shoe is going to drop later this week. I know people in the India office who were completely blindsided by invites on their calendar for 9 AM sharp. It’s brutal. Is anyone actually feeling safe right now? I feel like I'm just waiting for my turn, and at this point, I’m not even sure if I’d be upset to leave. The culture has shifted so much since I joined. We’re just numbers on a spreadsheet now, and the 'mission' feels like a distant memory compared to the relentless pursuit of margins.

It is brutal to watch, but honestly, anyone who has been paying attention to the burn rate over the last few years shouldn't be shocked. The growth-at-all-costs strategy was always going to hit a wall eventually. When the easy venture capital money dries up, the 'core business' rhetoric is just the standard corporate way of saying they need to slash overhead to satisfy shareholders. It feels cold, but at this point, the revolving door culture there is practically institutionalized. Don't waste energy being surprised; just focus on your next move and make sure your network is prepped for the pivot.

I am so sorry you are dealing with this. The constant 'restructuring' cycle is absolutely soul-crushing and it kills any sense of job security or company loyalty. Being left in that state of perpetual anxiety is a nightmare, especially when the messaging from leadership feels like a hollow script. Please remember that your value as a professional isn't tied to an algorithm or a quarterly efficiency goal. Take the time to grieve the loss of your teammates and the culture you enjoyed, then prioritize yourself. You have the skills to land somewhere that treats its people like more than just line items.
