Just survived a layoff - Sharing my severance experience

Just wanted to share my recent experience in case it helps anyone else. I was part of the Rides engineering team and got laid off last week after 5 years with the company. The severance package was 3 months' salary, plus unused vacation time, and they're covering COBRA for 6 months. They also offered career counseling services, which I haven't looked into yet. Honestly, it felt pretty standard, maybe even a little less generous than some of my friends at other companies got. The worst part was the suddenness of it all. One minute I'm in a meeting, the next I'm being escorted out of the building. Make sure your LinkedIn is updated, even if you aren't actively looking. You never know.

Sorry to hear about the layoff. 5 years is a long time, that's rough. Severance packages are so variable these days. Definitely look into the career counseling, it can't hurt. And don't forget to negotiate your unemployment benefits! Companies sometimes try to lowball those, so make sure you know your rights in your state. Good luck with the job search, you'll land on your feet.

3 months plus COBRA and some career help seems…okay. I've heard Uber used to be much more generous. Makes you wonder about their current financial state. Anyone else think this is a sign of deeper problems within the company, or am I being too cynical? Still, hope you find something better soon!
