Is the 'Efficiency' narrative just a cover for another round?

I’ve been seeing more leadership talk about 'optimizing our core business' and 'trimming the fat' in our internal syncs lately. It’s the same language they used right before the big cuts last year. My manager is suddenly obsessed with granular status reports and double-checking who is on what project, which usually happens right before they look for redundancy. Is anyone else noticing their leads being weirdly tight-lipped or constantly in 'strategic planning' meetings that seem to go nowhere? I’m trying to stay optimistic, but the atmosphere on the floor is just heavy. I’ve been quietly cleaning up my resume just in case, but I’d rather not jump ship if I’m just being paranoid. Any insights from people in other departments? Are things as quiet for you as they are in dev?

I’ve been tracking the same patterns in my department. The shift toward hyper-granular reporting is almost always a precursor to a reduction in force. It feels like they’re auditing output just to build a case for the next round of cuts. My lead is doing the same vague 'strategic planning' song and dance, avoiding any direct questions about headcount stability. If history is any indicator, I’d suggest updating your portfolio and checking your networking contacts. When the middle management starts acting this nervous and secretive, it rarely ends in a business-as-usual scenario for the rest of us. Stay sharp and look out for your own interests first.
