Just got laid off from Unity - AMA about the process

Well, it finally happened. Got the call this morning - part of a "restructuring" effort, according to HR. I was a senior software engineer on the editor team, been here for 3 years. The severance package was...okay. Two months' salary, plus accrued vacation time. They offered outplacement services, which I guess is nice. The whole thing felt super impersonal, like they were just reading from a script. Anyone have specific questions about the process or what to expect? Happy to share what I know to help others prepare.

Sorry to hear that, mate. Three years is a decent chunk of time. The impersonal thing sounds about right for big corporate layoffs. Definitely take advantage of the outplacement services - they can be surprisingly helpful for resume polishing and interview practice. Also, don't forget to negotiate! Two months isn't terrible, but see if you can squeeze anything else out of them, especially regarding benefits continuation.

Honestly, I'm starting to think Unity is just hemorrhaging money and doesn't have a clue how to fix it. 'Restructuring' is code for 'we messed up and are desperately trying to cut costs.' Two months for a senior engineer? That's insulting. I hope you're already hitting up LinkedIn and applying everywhere. Don't wait for the outplacement; start now. The market's still tough, but good engineers are always in demand somewhere.
