Feeling like a number: The morale drain is real

I’ve been trying to keep my head down and just hit my metrics, but after seeing the news about the 91 layoffs in Maryland, it’s getting impossible to stay focused. It feels like every quarter we hear about 'efficiency' and 'streamlining,' but in practice, it just means more work for those of us left behind while everyone is constantly looking over their shoulder. There’s zero transparency from leadership about where the actual stopping point is for these cuts. Does anyone actually feel secure here anymore? I’m starting to wonder if I should just stop waiting for the axe to fall and start polishing the resume now while the market is still somewhat decent. It’s hard to stay loyal to a place that treats us like a line item on a spreadsheet.

It is exhausting to watch the company prioritize these 'efficiency' metrics while morale completely tanks. When you’re constantly under the threat of being the next one out, it’s impossible to do your best work. Leadership seems to think these cuts are just numbers on a spreadsheet, but they fail to realize that they are eroding the trust and loyalty of the entire staff. At this point, I don’t think anyone here feels truly secure, regardless of how good their numbers look.

I hear you, and honestly, the silence from the top is the most frustrating part. They love to talk about being a 'top-tier' institution, yet they treat the human capital like an expense that needs to be minimized every few months. The work-life balance has shifted into just trying to survive the day-to-day without getting put on a layoff list. It's reached a point where looking for an exit strategy feels like the only logical way to regain some actual job security.
