Performance reviews feeling more aggressive this year?

Just finished my annual performance review and it was a complete 180 from last year. My manager, who is usually pretty chill, was hyper-focused on nitpicking minor KPIs that were never even mentioned as priorities in Q1. It felt like they were deliberately looking for reasons to justify a lower rating. I’ve heard whispers from other departments that the curve is being forced downward to make room for 'performance-based' cuts. If they are looking for an excuse to trim the headcount, they’re definitely setting the stage with these reviews. It feels predatory, honestly. I've been here for four years and have always been a solid performer, but this year felt like a setup. Anyone else getting hit with weirdly specific criticism that feels like it’s being manufactured to justify a layoff?

Same experience here in the refinery operations unit. It feels like the goalposts have moved significantly compared to last year. My lead was focused on metrics that don't really reflect the actual safety or output benchmarks we've been hitting. There is definitely a sense of unease in the breakroom right now, and the word around the plant is that leadership is tightening the belt across the board. Don't take it personally; it seems like a company-wide strategy to justify layoffs rather than a critique of your actual work.

That sounds like classic Valero corporate maneuvering. Whenever they start squeezing performance ratings, a restructuring or headcount reduction is usually right behind it. They did this exact same thing a few years back right before the reorg. If they’re nitpicking minor KPIs, it's a clear signal that they’ve already decided on their targets and are just checking the boxes for HR compliance. Honestly, I'd update your resume this weekend and start looking elsewhere before the 'performance-based' cuts actually start rolling out in the next quarter.
