Feeling the pressure on non-core projects

It’s getting weird here. I’ve noticed that any project not directly tied to the core registry services is suddenly under a microscope. Last week, our VP spent an entire meeting questioning the ROI of our experimental initiatives. Usually, those get a pass, but the tone has shifted significantly toward 'efficiency' and 'streamlining.' It’s not a full-blown panic yet, but there’s a heavy cloud hanging over the R&D and side-hustle teams. I’ve heard rumors that certain budgets for next quarter were slashed by 20% without much explanation. If you’re working on something that isn't a revenue driver, I’d suggest getting your documentation in order and maybe making sure you have a back-up plan. Management is definitely prepping for something, even if they won't say the word 'layoff' out loud. I’ve been through this cycle at a previous company, and the pattern of questioning every single resource allocation is almost always the first sign that HR is about to get a list of names. Stay sharp out there.

The shift toward 'efficiency' is just the new corporate euphemism for clearing the decks before the next earnings call. It is the classic VeriSign play: when the core registry business carries the entire valuation, they have zero patience for moonshots that don’t show immediate, high-margin returns. I’ve seen this cycle happen every few years. If you’re on an experimental team, I’d suggest looking at your headcount and budget projections. If the numbers don’t look bulletproof, the microscope is going to turn into a scalpel pretty quickly.

I’m seeing the same thing. The vibe has definitely soured compared to last year. It feels like leadership is obsessed with protecting the dividend at the expense of anything that isn't a guaranteed win. Honestly, if you aren't working on the core infrastructure or something mission-critical, you’re basically a target. I’ve already started updating my resume and checking the market because when the 'streamlining' talk starts, it rarely stops with just a few budget cuts. Better to have a backup plan ready before the axe actually falls.
