Middle management seems to be disappearing

Has anyone else noticed how many skip-level meetings are being canceled or simply not rescheduled lately? In the past few weeks, three different directors in my org have either left or transitioned into these weird, vague 'special project' roles that lead to nowhere. When people ask HR, it’s just the standard 'we don’t comment on personnel changes.' It feels like they are clearing out the mid-level layer to make a restructuring move much easier if they decide to pull the trigger. I’ve been here long enough to know that when the VPs start making direct decisions for the individual contributors, it’s a bad sign. I’m not panicking yet, but I’ve already moved my personal files off my work machine just in case. It feels like the company is pivoting toward a leaner structure, and usually, the rank and file are the ones who pay the price for that strategy. Is anyone else seeing this trend in their department, or is it just isolated to the infrastructure side?

The shift at VeriSign is becoming impossible to ignore. I’ve noticed the exact same trend in my department—people are being shuffled into these ambiguous 'special projects' that feel more like a holding pen before an exit than actual work. When you see the middle layer being hollowed out like this, it’s usually a sign that leadership is preparing for a major consolidation. It’s stressful, but it definitely feels like the calm before a storm. Keep your resume polished and stay alert.

Honestly, it feels like the company is just autopilot right now. Everyone keeps waiting for a memo or some transparency, but the silence from the top is deafening. Watching directors vanish into thin air without a word to their teams creates such a toxic environment of speculation. If they really are planning a major restructuring, they’re going about it in the most demoralizing way possible. I’m just trying to keep my head down and do my job, but the writing is clearly on the wall.
