Is the consolidation talk actually happening this time?

Been hearing whispers from the project management side about further 'synergy' targets for Q3. We’ve been through these cycles before, but the chatter feels different this time. Normally, leadership is pretty vocal about the vision, but lately, it’s been total radio silence on our site’s specific long-term roadmap. Does anyone know if there’s a secret push to move more engineering functions to lower-cost hubs? My manager was acting incredibly cagey during my 1-on-1 yesterday when I asked about the upcoming budget freeze rumors. It’s hard to stay focused on these deliverables when it feels like the rug could get pulled at any second. If anyone in corporate or the regional offices has heard anything about headcount adjustments, please drop a hint. I'm just trying to figure out if I should start brushing up the resume or if I'm just being paranoid because of the current industry climate.

The radio silence is definitely the biggest red flag. I've been through two rounds of consolidation at this company, and the pattern is always the same: they stop talking about long-term development right before the reorg announcements drop. If your manager is dodging questions, assume the worst and start polishing your resume now. They aren't keeping secrets because there’s good news coming; they’re doing it to keep the output high until they can hit the ‘go’ button on the restructuring. Don’t wait for an official email to prepare yourself.

Honestly, the 'synergy' buzzwords usually mean exactly what you fear. I wouldn't hold your breath for transparency from leadership—they treat these moves like tactical ops rather than people management. If they’re shifting engineering to lower-cost hubs, it’s a done deal behind closed doors already. The best thing you can do is network with folks in the other departments to see if they’re getting the same cagey treatment. If everyone is getting the cold shoulder, the consolidation is likely already moving from the planning phase to execution.
