Corporate 'efficiency' hits again: Anyone else feeling the squeeze?

Is anyone surprised? The August 7th cull was inevitable. We all saw the signs in the quarterly briefings—all that talk about 'optimizing our footprint' was just code for this. It feels like every year there’s a new excuse to trim the headcount, regardless of how well the store performance or corporate operations are actually doing. $15.5B in profit last year, and yet here we are, seeing friends get their access revoked on a Wednesday morning. I’m tired of the corporate speak. They frame it as a 'strategic evolution,' but for the folks getting a calendar invite for a 'mandatory sync' with HR, it’s a life-altering event. The relocation ultimatum is the worst part—it’s basically a way to get people to quit so they don't have to pay full unemployment or severance. If you’re sitting in Bentonville today, watch your back. The culture has shifted from 'people-first' to 'data-first' in a way that feels pretty cold. I’m starting to look at startups and smaller firms where you aren't just another headcount metric on a spreadsheet. Good luck to everyone getting the boot today; keep your heads up.

It is the same cycle every single time. They talk about lean operations and synergy, but it is just a sanitized way of saying they want to boost the stock price by cutting the people who actually run the place. I stopped expecting loyalty from leadership years ago. It’s all about the margins, and we are just numbers on a spreadsheet to them. Honestly, if you aren't looking for an exit strategy yet, you’re just waiting for the next round of cuts to hit your own department. Don't fall for their internal memos.

I’ve been with this company for over a decade, and the culture has completely eroded. They keep pushing these 'efficiency' metrics that are physically impossible to hit without ignoring safety or customer service, and then they act shocked when they have to slash teams to balance the books. It’s a toxic downward spiral. Watching talented people get pushed out while executives brag about record profits on earnings calls is just demoralizing. At this point, the best thing you can do for your mental health is to stop caring more about the store than they do.
