Severance Package - What to Expect?

I'm not sure if layoffs are coming, but it's always good to be prepared. If Walmart were to announce layoffs, what kind of severance package could an employee with 5 years under their belt expect? I'm a department manager (hourly). Thinking about things like weeks of pay, benefits continuation, outplacement services, etc. Any insights or experiences from past layoffs would be greatly appreciated. I'm just trying to get a realistic picture of what might happen if the worst comes to pass. Thanks in advance!

Walmart severance can vary widely, but 5 years *should* get you something decent. Don't expect a goldmine, but a few weeks of pay per year of service is a reasonable starting point. Check your employee handbook for any policy statements on layoffs. Benefits continuation (like health insurance) is usually offered, but you'll likely have to pay the full premium under COBRA. Outplacement is less common for hourly roles, unfortunately. Good luck, hope you don't need it!

Honestly, don't hold your breath for anything amazing. Walmart isn't known for being super generous in these situations. I knew a few folks who were let go years ago after a store closure, and the severance was pretty minimal – maybe a couple of weeks' pay plus unused vacation time. Definitely read the fine print of whatever they offer, and don't be afraid to negotiate, but keep your expectations in check. Start looking for other opportunities now, just in case.
