I was at the Swedesboro site when the news broke. Management is playing it close to the chest, but the HR rep I spoke with confirmed that staying until the final date is mandatory if you want the full severance. It’s a classic corporate tactic to keep the warehouse running at full capacity while everyone is looking for new work. My advice is to get everything in writing immediately. Don't trust the verbal promises from supervisors, as they are often just as in the dark as we are. Start polishing that resume tonight and look into local unions that might have resources for displaced workers.
That really sucks, man. Honestly, stay or go, Walmart isn't going to look out for your best interests. They call it a 'strategic restructuring' because it sounds better than firing a hundred people, but we all know the truth. Check your employee handbook specifically for the severance policy sections and see if there is any language about 'retention bonuses'—that’s usually the trap they set to keep the facility afloat for a few more weeks. You might be better off taking the hit and getting out early if you can find a job elsewhere quickly. Take care of yourself.
