Anyone else getting weird vibes lately? Corporate bloat/hiring freeze?

I’ve been at the corporate office for a few years now, and the atmosphere feels different. We’ve seen a handful of quiet departures in my department over the last two months, and backfilling has become a nightmare. Usually, management is pretty transparent, but everything is being kept super close to the chest right now. My manager keeps dodging questions about Q3 goals and project roadmaps, which is usually a red flag in my experience. I know grocery margins are razor-thin, but the company culture has always been 'family first,' so hearing rumors about a potential RIF (Reduction in Force) feels out of character. Is anyone else noticing a change in tone or seeing similar gaps in other departments? Just trying to gauge if I’m being paranoid or if the writing is on the wall.

The internal culture shift is definitely noticeable from the store level too. It feels like they are squeezing every bit of productivity out of the associates while cutting hours across the board. The constant focus on metrics over people is starting to erode the 'family' feeling they’ve built their reputation on for decades. When leadership starts being vague about future goals, it’s usually because they are preparing for a pivot that won't be popular with the long-term employees. Honestly, it’s starting to feel just like any other generic corporate chain.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's a hiring freeze or a restructuring underway. In my experience, once management starts stonewalling on basic questions about project roadmaps and team composition, they are already deep into cost-cutting measures. It’s tough because Wegmans used to be the gold standard for employee retention and workplace morale, but those days feel like they are fading fast. If you’re seeing departures and no backfills, start updating your resume now. It’s better to be prepared for the worst than to wait around for an announcement that you’re being downsized.
