Performance Improvement Plan spike?

Curious if other departments are seeing a sudden obsession with 'performance metrics' and arbitrary PIPs lately. My team has seen three people get placed on formal reviews in the last two weeks, all for stuff that was considered 'fine' a month ago. It feels like they are clearing the deck to justify cutting headcount without calling it a formal layoff event. It’s a classic move to avoid WARN act notices or just to trim the bottom 10% under the guise of poor performance. If they’re looking to prune the tree before the year-end earnings call, this is the cheapest way to do it. Just wanted to see if this is an isolated incident in my department or if the whole organization is tightening the screws simultaneously. It’s getting pretty demoralizing to work in this environment where every task feels like a trap.

I’ve noticed the exact same trend in our division. It’s definitely a calculated effort to force people out without the legal headaches of a mass layoff. The goalposts are shifting daily, and it’s creating a culture of paranoia where everyone is afraid to speak up. Management knows exactly what they’re doing by tagging these as individual performance issues rather than departmental cuts. Keep your documentation in order and start looking elsewhere, because the environment is only going to get more toxic from here.

It’s not just you. The vibe at Welltower has shifted significantly over the last quarter. They’re squeezing everyone to hit impossible targets just to justify these PIPs. It’s a ruthless strategy to trim headcount while keeping the official numbers low enough to fly under the radar. Don't take it personally—this is a top-down mandate to shrink the workforce by any means necessary. Protect yourself, update your resume, and don't count on things going back to normal anytime soon.
