The shift in tone is definitely noticeable. When mid-level leaders start jumping ship and their responsibilities get dumped onto the remaining staff without any budget for new hires, it’s a classic red flag. They keep talking about 'operational efficiency' to distract us from the fact that the ship is leaking. Honestly, keep your resume updated because the silence from the top usually precedes a round of layoffs or a major restructuring. They aren't being transparent because they don't have a plan that doesn't involve cutting costs at our expense.
I wouldn't jump to conclusions just yet. Every large organization goes through these cycles of 'right-sizing' where they streamline reporting lines and redistribute workloads. It’s stressful, sure, but it doesn't automatically mean a collapse is imminent. Sometimes leadership goes quiet because they’re in the middle of sensitive negotiations or complex shifts in strategy that they can’t legally disclose to the entire company. Stay focused on your specific deliverables, try not to get caught up in the office gossip, and see how the next quarter plays out before you panic.
