Anyone else noticing the travel budget being slashed?

Is anyone else getting their travel requests kicked back by finance lately? I’ve had two site visits denied in the last month that were previously approved for 'operational necessity.' My manager is playing dumb, but we all know the drill. When the purse strings tighten this hard, it’s usually the precursor to a bigger announcement. I’ve been through two rounds of cuts here before, and the pattern is identical—first, the travel freezes, then the 'streamlining' consultants show up, then the LinkedIn status updates start. Trying to gauge if this is just a Q3 budget adjustment or if the writing is on the wall for something bigger in Q4. I’m already dusting off the resume just in case. Anyone hearing chatter about potential org changes in the Ops side of the house?

I’ve seen this exact movie before, and it never ends well for the rank and file. It started exactly like this in the last cycle—sudden scrutiny on even the most routine travel expenses, followed by vague emails about 'fiscal discipline.' If they are already blocking site visits that are supposedly essential for operations, they are definitely hoarding cash for whatever storm is coming next. Keep your resume polished and start documenting your projects now, because management is clearly preparing the ground for headcount reductions.

You're definitely not imagining things. The shift in tone from the finance department has been jarring over the last few weeks. It feels like they are looking for any excuse to kill a budget line, regardless of the impact on our actual work. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for an honest answer from leadership; they’ll keep saying everything is normal until the very second they drop the hammer. It is frustrating to watch them prioritize optics over the actual maintenance and site support we need to function safely.
