The 'culture' talk is always the biggest red flag. We’ve seen this pattern before at Zebra. When leadership starts hyper-focusing on badge-in metrics, it’s rarely about collaboration and almost always about creating a paper trail for performance-based exits or identifying who is already looking for the door. They want to trim the headcount without the PR headache of a massive, publicized layoff. If they are dodging questions about Q4 targets, you should trust your gut. Start updating your resume now and keep your head down; it’s better to be prepared than to be blindsided when the next internal memo drops.
I honestly think you’re reading the room exactly right. Every time management pushes this hard on 'office presence' without a clear business objective, a downsizing event follows shortly after. They are banking on voluntary attrition to reduce the payroll before they have to resort to involuntary cuts. It’s a classic tactic to make the environment uncomfortable enough that the people they don't want to pay severance to just quit on their own. Don’t buy into the collaboration nonsense. Focus on your own output, keep your network outside the company active, and don't make yourself an easy target.
