Performance reviews and 'efficiency' mandates

It’s starting to feel like the upcoming review cycle is being used as a precursor to thinning the herd. My manager spent a significant portion of our check-in talking about 'realigning resources' and 'operational efficiency,' which I know is corporate speak for cutting costs. Does anyone else feel like the goalposts for performance targets have been shifted intentionally to make it easier to justify exits? I’ve seen this pattern at previous companies, and it usually ends with a sudden wave of 'performance-based' separations that conveniently look like mass layoffs on paper. It’s stressful enough trying to hit these impossible quarterly numbers without the looming threat of the HR axe. If you're seeing your team's metrics become increasingly unrealistic or if you're being pushed into a PIP despite hitting your KPIs, let’s document what’s going on here. It’s time we compare notes on whether this is a localized issue or a company-wide initiative.

I’ve been tracking the same signals lately. The 'operational efficiency' narrative is definitely picking up steam, and it’s a classic move when leadership wants to trim headcount without calling it a formal layoff. When they start moving the goalposts right before a review cycle, it’s rarely a coincidence. I’d suggest documenting every single win you have right now. If they are looking for reasons to push people out, don't give them an easy justification by failing to highlight your current output. It’s a stressful way to operate, but keep your head down and your resume polished just in case the worst happens.

Honestly, it feels like the writing is on the wall. Zebra has been tightening the belt for a while, and these 'efficiency mandates' are just the latest flavor of corporate strategy. I’ve noticed the shift in expectations too; tasks that used to be manageable are now being framed as missing metrics. Don't take it personally—it’s usually just a numbers game being played from the top down. If you’re feeling the pressure, you aren't alone. It is probably time to start networking and seeing what else is out there before the 'realigning' starts hitting the team in waves.
